Dahlia
Petal upon petal.
Layered petals give dahlias their generous shape. These studio portraits explore pale pink flowers, from a darker-edged bloom to a softly open, creamy centre.
- Colour
- Pale pink in these references
- Form
- Layered decorative bloom
Look closely and each petal changes the outline. The reference photographs show decorative forms; our arrangement archive also includes rounder, peach-coloured dahlias.

Water
Keep the cut ends well submerged and check daily. A fixed fraction of the vase is not reliable across vase shapes.
Cut
Use a clean, sharp blade to make a fresh cut without crushing the stem.
Refresh
Refresh every couple of days; sooner if the water becomes cloudy.
Vase life
4–8 days
The essentials
Stem & leaves
Soft, hollow stems; handle carefully. Remove every leaf that would sit below the waterline.
Placement
A cool indoor position away from direct sun, radiators and strong draughts.
Freshness
Choose firm, fully open heads. Avoid brown petals at the back, bruising or damaged foliage.
Opening
Closed buds generally do not open after cutting; do not rely on a tight bud to develop in the vase.
Problems & fixes
The flower is drooping
Water uptake may be poor, or the bloom may be ageing.
Clean the vase, refresh the solution and recut the stem. Remove it if the stem is soft or the head does not recover.
The bud will not open
It may have been cut too early.
Choose fully open dahlias next time; changing the water cannot reliably rescue an immature bud.
Water smells or turns cloudy
Decaying plant material and microbial growth can impair water uptake.
Wash the vase, remove submerged leaves and deteriorating stems, and replace the solution.
Flower details.
Dahlia species and garden hybrids; cultivar unconfirmed.
Season
Summer into autumn
Until frost.
Ask the studio about imported or protected-grown supply; no live stock is implied.
Appearance
focal flower
Round, layered flower head; forms vary widely.

Origin
Mexico and Central America
The genus extends into Colombia.
What it loves.
Small, open or airy flowers create space around the full heads.
Avoid: Crowding the arrangement with too many equally large focal heads.
Open faces and fine stems contrast with dense dahlia petals; seen together in our archive.
A smooth, directional line can interrupt the rounded silhouette. Keep the balance open.
Scabiosa and grasses
Small accents and fine lines soften the transition between large flower heads.
Vase
A bowl or medium-neck vase that supports the weight of the heads.
Style
Full focal cluster with airy stems around the edge.
Start with
3–5 stems
Starting point for a small arrangement; adjust for head size and vessel.
